St. Clare’s college in Oxford is celebrating its 60th Birthday this year. To mark the anniversary the college commissioned artist and teacher Francesca Shakespeare to paint a special map – showing how large the college is.
The College was founded in 1953 by Anne Drydel OBE whose mission was to create a place of learning in Oxford which would bring together young people from the UK, and initially Europe, after the devastation of the Second World War. It started in a house in a single room and has since expanded considerably.
Today the College welcomes students from 45 different countries on a range of programmes in an atmosphere which encourages young people to find out about each other’s cultures and to make friends from all over the world, friends, moreover, which will last a lifetime.
