Congratulations to Ellie Rayer, former Claires Court Head Girl (2014-2015) on this week’s announcement that she has been selected for the GB Hockey Squad. Throughout her time at the school Ellie excelled at sport and was an excellent role model for her peers, securing a place at Loughborough University. We are thrilled to hear about her well-deserved selection and caught up with her as she headed off for training at Bisham Abbey.
“I am delighted to be included in the GB Hockey centralised squad for the start of the Tokyo 2020 cycle, joining an incredible group of players. Obviously, with the success of the Rio squad, there are big shoes to fill and hockey couldn’t be in a better place. Getting selected into the squad is an honour, but now the hard work really starts and that’s the most exciting part! I have to say a huge thank you to everyone at Claires Court who has helped me along the way… and now I’m local again (training out of Bisham) I’m sure I’ll be popping into see you!”
Ellie will be training daily alongside completing the second year of her Sports Technology degree. She plans to split the final year over two years.
Jo Cox, Head of PE at Claires Court Girls commented, “Ellie’s natural athleticism shone through from an early age. She first picked up a hockey stick in Year 3; her undeniable speed and passion to be the best stood her apart from others, you could just see that she had what it takes to play at a high level. Having the attributes is one thing, but to excel in sport takes hours of training and Ellie would practise day in and day out, come rain or shine, to hone her skills. She would even make me do her fitness runs with her! Ellie has always wanted to be a professional sportswoman and she now has the opportunity to shine on the centre stage at a time when hockey is flourishing after the success of Rio 2016. I couldn’t be prouder and look forward to watching her thrive at the highest level.”
