Announcing an exciting new chapter for Lyonsdown School

17th January 2019

Lyonsdown School in New Barnet is opening a new chapter in its 112-year history, as it announces its plans to become an all girls’ School, alongside a series of exciting updates and enhancements to its facilities and curriculum.

“Historically, we have offered places to boys up to the age of 7, and our girls stay until age 11,” says Headmaster, Christopher Hammond. “From September 2019 our Nursery class will be for girls aged 3+, and from September 2020 our Reception class will be all girls too.”

Whilst the phased transition to all girls’ education will be complete by 2022, there will be no change to the provision for the boys currently at the School, nor those joining in Reception this September. “We recognise that our move to becoming an all girls’ school will mean that some families with boys may be disappointed that they can no longer join Lyonsdown in the future and we will, of course, support them to find the best alternative for their son,” continues Mr Hammond. “However, this move will allow us not only to better meet the high demand for girls’ places in our Nursery class, but also to fully embrace all girls’ education. We will be able to focus entirely on their specific development needs from age 3 upwards, preparing girls to thrive both academically and personally, so they are ready for tomorrow’s world.”

Alongside this planned change to the School’s intake, there are a series of other exciting developments that are phased to take place over the coming months. This includes enhancing facilities by creating a new Library and Science Laboratory, extending the Dining Room, refurbishing classrooms and improving the School’s outdoor space.

“We are also further enriching our curriculum, to broaden and deepen every girl’s learning experience, both in the classroom and beyond,” concludes Mr Hammond. “Together, all of these developments will ensure Lyonsdown is, for the next 112 years, continuing to prepare pupils to secure places at, and move on to, their schools of choice including many of London’s top independent and maintained senior schools.”

“Our decision to move to all girls from Nursery upwards was made following a thorough and comprehensive review of all aspects of the education we offer at Lyonsdown School, involving all our Governors and the School’s Senior Leadership Team and taking into account the opinions of parents and staff,” says Chair of the Board, Andrea Morley. “We are pleased to now be able to share our exciting plans more widely and are looking forward to fully embracing all girls’ education.”
