Montessori Nursery, The Gower School, Islington, has been awarded both bronze and silver awards by Healthy Early Years London (HEYL), the second highest level achieved by a nursery in Islington since the award was recently launched.
Healthy Early Years London is an awards scheme funded by the Mayor of London which supports and recognises achievements in child health, wellbeing and development in early years settings. The Gower School received the awards based on the improvements made to their nursery in regards to quality time spent outside. The inspectors were particularly impressed with The Gower School’s Forest School programme and received high praise for this, also commending the nursery on their use of the upstairs decking area for the children aged 14 months to three years.
By improving the garden, The Gower School improved the quality of their outdoor space, which means the children want to spend more time outdoors. One of the additions made were new sand and water cascades from Community Playthings. Through their Forest School sessions the children are exposed to a higher quality outdoor environment, and can explore experiences not available in the school garden such as climbing trees.
Building on the success of Healthy Schools London, HEYL will help to reduce health inequalities by supporting a healthy start to life across themes that include healthy eating, oral and physical health and early cognitive development.
The Gower School is currently working towards the highest award level, gold. You can find The Gower School on the Healthy Early Years London’s Settings webpage.
