St James Prep in Kensington, London has long been a trailblazer in its mindful approach to educating the whole child. This Spring Term marks an exciting new chapter for the school with the appointment of Allegra McEvedy MBE, to oversee the cookery syllabus in its new professionally designed teaching kitchen.
Described by The Independent as “a caterer with a conscience”, Allegra has been cooking professionally for over 25 years in some of London’s best restaurants, written 8 cookery books, co-founded LEON, been one of the judges on CBBC’s Junior Bake Off and co-host of CBBC’s new series, Step Up to The Plate. Allegra also owns the iconic Albertine wine bar in Shepherds Bush.
Commenting on the new programme and what to expect, Allegra says: “In the St James Kitchen the children will learn not only to engage with ingredients and cookery, they will also learn teamwork, working to time and tidying up after themselves. So, in the first lesson we will be making bread, butter and jam – all from scratch. Because armed with a jam sandwich you can do anything in life! Other lessons over the next two terms will include maki & temaki rolls (vegetarian of course), risotto, Indian street food, and for the final lesson of the summer term we will make both ice-cream and nicecream (dairy free) for them to enjoy with their friends in the playground.”
Allegra continued, “Cookery is part art, part science, and I’ve yet to meet a child who doesn’t engage with it, given the right surroundings. The joy and pride they feel when they have cooked from scratch is boundless and so rewarding for all. Being able to share and provide for those they love are lessons they will never forget and hopefully will run throughout their lives. I chose to send my daughters to St James because I believe it is the best place for them to grow as whole little people; caring about those around them and the planet we live on, not just themselves. Learning how to cook and enjoy being in the kitchen is a perfect fit with the St James ethos of caring and sharing, and I’m hugely looking forward to showing the children just how much fun you can have in a kitchen!”
