Should a child’s early education focus purely on gaining knowledge and an understanding of facts and figures? “At Brookham, we develop minds and bodies, preparing children for their future success by inspiring their passions and building their resilience for the challenges and adventures that lie ahead of them,” explains Mrs Sophie Baber, Brookham School Head Teacher.
In Year 3, the children are learning about healthy living, paying attention to exercise, healthy eating and the importance of looking after their mental wellbeing throughout their lives.
In gloriously unseasonal sunshine, the day began with a run. Children invited parents and pets to accompany them on a cross-country odyssey through the playground, sports fields and woods, not forgetting to spend some time on the hill sprint circuit.
Now hungry and in need of some healthy nutrition, Year 3 returned to Brookham to meet Mrs Fiennes and learn all about her Kick Start Smoothie, a delicious combination of healthy fruits, spinach and ginger, which has recently won the season juice competition at Cowdray Farm Shop and Cafe. They were all inspired by how good it tasted and delighted to learn the health benefits of each ingredient. In fact, later in the day, they designed and prepared their own healthy smoothies. Some intrepid children even added spirulina, despite learning that it is, in fact, a dried Mongolian pondweed!
A plethora of activities was to follow: a circuits session in the Sports Hall, the Illinois Agility Test, aqua aerobics in the pool and standing long-jump on the football field; the ultimate plank challenge, with children pushing their minds and bodies to keep in position for 5, 6, 7 and even 8 minutes!
Exhausted after a strenuous day, the children turned their concentration to their inner wellbeing, welcoming their parents back for yoga with Heidi Wells of Healthflex, in Haslemere. With calm grace and an air of tranquillity, she led a relaxing session of stretching, breathing and thoughtful concentration. You could have heard a pin drop in the Theatre, despite the high number of eager participants.
“The feedback from yesterday has really been incredible both from parents and children. Thank you so much for finding the energy and time within the curriculum to be able to organise a Healthy Fitness Day. I’ve never known a year group do so much activity and be so fit. They are non-stop – thank you.” Lara Goldsmith, mother and Y3 Parent Representative.
