US Lacrosse Scholarship for Malvern St James Student Penny
Penny Green, Year 13, has been offered a full, four year lacrosse scholarship by St Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.
She was ‘spotted’ by a visiting coach from the University whilst playing in the U19 Lacrosse World Cup in July 2015 in Edinburgh, who immediately approached her and made the scholarship offer. Over the following months contact was maintained with St Joseph’s and, with support from Malvern St James, Penny successfully completed the USA SAT tests which are a pre-requisite to attend a US university. A visit to the University with her mother followed in January to attend a lacrosse open weekend, where she met the other 10 lacrosse recruits for 2016, all of whom were American. The university facilities, coaches, students and educational support were exceptional and as a result Penny has accepted her place and will be starting her 4 year degree in August 2016.
Penny says “I am very excited but of course will miss my family, friends and my cocker spaniel Finley. Studying abroad and training and playing with the lacrosse squad will be extremely challenging, but I have decided that it is too good an opportunity to miss.”
Last month Penny and her sister Sophie represented Wales in the U19 Home Internationals, which were held at Surrey Sports Park at Guildford. This was the first time that they have played together in the same team for Wales. Wales played England first and started off very well leading 4 – 3 after 15 minutes. However England took hold of the game after that and won the match after 60 minutes of effort in the wind and freezing rain. Both Penny and Sophie managed to score goals in the match. They then played Scotland the next day, a match which Scotland won last year on home territory. Wales made a confident and convincing start and dominated throughout, achieving an impressive win of 21 – 4, with both Penny and Sophie scoring and setting up several of the goal tally.
