This course is for those who are new to the SENCo role in independent schools and looking for advice in organising their provision, understanding SEN and how this role is different in the private sector. 

Aims of the course

Understand how SEN is unique in the independent sector; learn about different types of SEND. Explore the SENCo role and responsibilities in an independent school - and set up robust systems in your school. Learn what you need to comply with in the private sector. The course will also explore working with parents and professionals. EHCPs, ISI and access arrangements will also be considered in detail. The course will end with what the future of SEND and possible changes.

Programme Outline

Segment 1 – The Learners & the Landscape (35 mins)

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand what SEND means in the independent school context.
  • Recognise different learning profiles and prevalence.

Content

  • SEND definitions: statutory vs. independent.
  • Common learning profiles (dyslexia, ADHD, ASC, etc.).
  • Prevalence: local, national, global context.
  • Strength-based perspective on SEND.

Activity (10 mins)

  • Small group: “Profile in Practice” — compare two student profiles with the same diagnosis, list their unique needs and strengths.
 

Segment 2 – The SENCO Role in Private Schools (35 mins)

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify your responsibilities and opportunities.
  • Understand how to set up or refine SEND provision in your school.

Content

  • Core duties: leadership, compliance, pastoral care.
  • Setting up systems: provision maps, intervention plans, information flow.
  • Working with parents — managing expectations.
  • Charging for learning support: legal and ethical considerations.

Activity (5 mins)

  • Draft a short “SEND Department Vision Statement” in pairs.

Segment 3 – Supporting Teachers Effectively (25 mins)

Learning Outcomes

  • Equip staff to deliver effective SEND support.

Content

  • Practical classroom strategies (differentiation, scaffolding, assistive tech).
  • How much theory teachers need vs. “just-in-time” strategies.
  • Sharing SEND information effectively without overloading staff.
  • Subject-specific considerations.

Activity (5 mins)

  • Create a “3-point SEND quick tip” card for staff.
 

Segment 4 – Formalities & Compliance (35 mins)

Learning Outcomes

  • Navigate EHCP processes, inspections, and JCQ access arrangements.

Content

  • EHCP basics: criteria, process, Annual Reviews.
  • LA engagement for independents.
  • JCQ Access Arrangements — what counts as evidence.
  • ISI inspection expectations for SEND.

Activity (10 mins)

  • Case study: review an example access arrangements application and decide if it meets JCQ evidence requirements.
 

Segment 5 – Forward Thinking & Q&A (20 mins)

Learning Outcomes

  • Prepare for change and think creatively about SEND provision.

Content

  • Future trends in SEND (tech, neurodiversity awareness, regulation changes).
  • Responding to complex scenarios.

Activity (10 mins)

  • Group scenario: “Budget cut — how do you protect provision?”
