Aims of the course

Understand how SEN is unique in the independent sector; learn about different types of SEND. Explore the SENCo role and responsibilities in an independent school - and set up robust systems in your school. Learn what you need to comply with in the private sector. The course will also explore working with parents and professionals. EHCPs, ISI and access arrangements will also be considered in detail. The course will end with what the future of SEND and possible changes.

Segment 1 – The Learners & the Landscape
Purpose: Context-setting and shared understanding

Focus:

  • SEND in the independent school context
  • SEN vs EAL, gaps in learning, teaching quality
  • Legal framework: SEND Code of Practice (guidance), Equality Act 2010
  • ISI expectations around identification and support

Outcome: Participants understand who their learners are and why SEND matters.

Segment 2 - The SENCO Role in Independent Schools
Purpose: Clarifying responsibility, accountability, and systems

Focus:

  • Core SENCo responsibilities and accountability
  • Identification, assessment and SEN register systems
  • Provision maps and intervention planning
  • Sharing SEN information with staff
  • Charging for SEN support – legal and ethical boundaries
  • Managing workload, priorities, and parental expectations

Outcome: Clear, inspection-safe understanding of the SENCo role.

Segment 3 – Supporting Teachers Effectively
Purpose: Translating SEN systems into classroom practice

Focus:

  • Practical classroom strategies for:
  • Cognition and learning needs
  • Attention and organisation difficulties
  • Communication and social interaction needs
  • Emotional and behavioural needs (SEMH)
  • Effective use of pupil passports and SEN registers
  • Subject-specific considerations

Segment 4 – Formalities, EHCPs and Access Arrangements
Purpose: Understanding statutory processes and compliance
