ISA response to the Department for Education white paper

The SEND system has faced unprecedented demand and strain over recent years. We therefore welcome the Government’s commitment to address this in the white paper published today.

Independent schools play a critical role in delivering the education and care for many thousands of children with SEND across the country. Our schools meet needs and provide capacity and expertise where it is needed. We are a crucial part of the SEND picture and want to contribute positively to the debate about the future of SEND provision.

Any reform must put the needs of the children and young people first. It is essential that all pupils with SEND have their needs met, whether in independent schools or state schools. We are therefore concerned by any proposals that would lead to some pupils being left without the funding for the education and care that they need.

We understand the need for reform of the SEND system, but there must be clarity and accountability, and explanation of how the changes can be successfully implemented for the benefit of all children with SEND. Independent mainstream and special schools are committed to meeting the needs of children with SEND and want to remain strong partners with the state in delivering this.
