Friday 27 January marks World Holocaust Day and Facing History & Ourselves UK have shared some resources and an article with ISA Members that can support Religious Studies, History, PSHE and English lessons.
Beki Martin, Executive Director of Facing History & Ourselves UK, has written ‘Commemorating the Holocaust and educating our young people to prevent antisemitism’, which explores the importance of educating young people about antisemitism and how to comfortably engage pupils in a deeper understanding of the holocaust.
Resources include:
● Holocaust Memorial Day 2023: Moving Beyond the Curriculum to Explore Ordinary People, an on-demand webinar providing practical activities and support to those who will be holding assemblies, tutor time or PSHE sessions without necessarily being subject specialists or feeling fully equipped to have such emotive and difficult conversations. (www.facinghistory.org/learning-events/holocaust-memorial-day-2023-moving-beyond-curriculum-explore-ordinary-people)
● PowerPoint Assembly for KS3 and KS4 Students, in which they listen to testimonies from some of the ordinary people who came to the UK as part of the Kindertransport and consider the importance of this testimony, and of memorialisation. (www.facinghistory.org/ideas-week/january-assemblies)
● Teaching Holocaust and Human Behaviour, a 15-lesson unit designed for History, RS, English and PSHE teachers, which leads students through a detailed, challenging study of the Holocaust that asks what this history can teach us about the power and impact of choices. (www.facinghistory.org/en-gb/resource-library/teaching-holocaust-human-behaviour-uk)
● Discussing Contemporary Antisemitism in the Classroom, a four-lesson unit designed for RS, PSHE, History and English lessons, which asks students to reflect on antisemitism, how it manifests today and what we can do to challenge it. (www.facinghistory.org/en-gb/resource-library/discussing-contemp orary-antisemitism-classroom)
Of course, whilst World Holocaust Day is tomorrow, these resources can be used throughout the year and can be used to support teaching whenever connected topics are taught.
The article ‘Commemorating the Holocaust and educating our young people to prevent antisemitism’ can be found in the documents tab of this group.
